CWS is proud to be a leader in ecumenical and community engagement in fostering welcoming communities with opportunity for all. Several congregations (across multiple faiths), institutions of higher learning, and community organizations have been working to support CWS Poughkeepsie’s services for newly arrived refugees.
Future resettlement of refugees through the CWS Poughkeepsie office is unlikely in the near term, due largely to the new ceiling of 45,000 refugees for the current year. Accordingly, CWS Poughkeepsie is not able to accommodate offers from volunteers to work with refugees, either for welcome teams or those having particular skills (social, language, teaching, etc.).
Examples of possible future involvement opportunities include:
- employers seeking to add to their workforce with capable refugee employees.
- property owners and landlords seeking responsible tenants to rent apartments.
- individuals wishing to fundraise to support CWS Poughkeepsie and our work with refugees.
- For faith communities and community organizations willing to serve as CWS Volunteer Teams to arriving families, please review this orientation guide, checklist, and welcome home list to provide additional information for welcome teams.
